Orchid Auction

It’s gonna be here before you know it! Our annual Orchid Auction! Those of you that have been to one before know our secret, but I am letting everyone that reads this in on it:  YOU CAN’ T GET A BETTER PRICE ON ORCHID PLANTS THAN YOU GET AT OUR AUCTION!

Whether you are a beginner that is just starting out, or a long time grower that just wants to add to your collection, there will be something here for you. Mark this date on your calender now, Thursday, Oct. 14th at 7pm. Watch this site for more information as it becomes available.

Downtime

Due to a combination of technical problems (spelled c-o-m-p-u-t-e-r  c-r-a-s-h) and health issues, this website has not been updated in quite a while. We are back online once again, and should get everything up to speed over the next few weeks. Thank you for your paitience.

CELEBRITY IN OUR MIDST

Congratulations to Tom Purviance  of Parkside Orchids  for his moment in the sun on the Martha Stewart show on Jan 18.  He did a show and tell featuring some of Parkside’s more interesting plants. He also did a repotting demo with Martha. This writer did notice that Tom made a little more of a mess than Martha did, a true sign of an experienced repotter!

Kudos to Matha for making the correction of Parkside’s location, I would have gone crazy looking for Otisville!

AOS AWARD

Congratulations to our very own Karen Zolnay of Hawk Haven Orchids  for her first AOS awarded orchid. Her Pot. Ikuko Akatsuko ‘Hawk Haven’ AM/AOS  received 86 points at the Mid Atlantic Judging Center on November 18th.  WAY TO GO KAREN!

Inclement weather

As winter begins to settle in, I just wanted to remind everyone that as soon as I get notice of a meeting cancellation it will posted on the website. All members should receive an email advising them of a meeting being cancelled. Those without internet access should have a contact from the society that they can call for an update. If you are at work, or elsewhere  that you cannot access your email, you can check here.  As always, if you feel the roads  are in any way unsafe. do not venture out and put yourself and others at risk.

MEMBER NEWS

First off, my apologies for the page not being updated recently. Life got real hectic for a bit, and the webpage kind of got lost in the shuffle. That being said, let’s move on.

Annual auction: What can I say? If you missed it, shame on you. Over 200 plants, and most went for a fraction of their worth. I personally went with the promise to myself I would only buy a couple of plants, and ended up walking out with 2 full boxes!

Celebrity News: This is a little late, but 2 of our members have made the big time! The Home and Design section of the Philadelphia Inquirer did a story about  Orchids on Oct. 30.  Julie and Geoff MacKenzie were profiled in the article. See the article here

November meeting: We were treated to a presentation by John Salventi of Parkside Orchids of a recent trip he made to Peru.  As usual, John did not let us down, with an excellent slide presentation of his trip. I am sure that more than a few members are having thoughts of going on an excursion like this!

September meeting

This was our annual “Potting party”.  Hats off the Jean for the exceptional plants that she purchased for this event. Some of the seedlings were already in bloom!

Each paid up member also got a free seedling to take home and grow, with a prize going to the first person to bloom it

ORCHIDFEST 2009
